Tom Cruise has a new action movie coming out this summer and, though we’ve already been treated to various trailers and previews for it, he’s yet to make an appearance to promote it. That’s because he’s probably in hiding until his “new face” settles, plastic surgeons say for the latest print issue of Star magazine (story via CB).

Fans and non-fans alike must have heard the rumors that have been plaguing Tom for many years, about the alleged work he’s had done to maintain his youthful looks. At one point, it was said that, besides a facelift and lots of Botox and fillers, he even had pec implants and liposuction on his abdomen.

Last week, the actor came out for the Jameson Empire Awards 2014 held in London, because he was honored with the Legend of Our Lifetime award. Clearly, that’s a distinction that you can’t just ignore. Above is a photo of him on the red carpet: compared to December 2013, his face looks fuller and puffier and, no, the tab says, it’s not because he’s gained weight.

Tom has been getting fillers and Botox to the point where he’s now forced to fly under the radar for a while, until everything settles. “Tom’s face looked like a puffy pillow. Everyone there couldn’t stop talking about how different he looked,” an eyewitness says for the magazine.

Dr. Anthony Youn, Star’s go-to plastic surgeon when it comes to the work celebrities are said to have had done, believes Tom has been getting too many fillers. He never met or treated the actor, so, of course, it’s all just guess work.

“Tom could be swollen from recent injections of a filler like Sculptra. This treatment is typically used to fill in gaunt faces, and it can cause facial swelling,” Dr. Youn says.

It is a known fact that a rounder face, with more fat, will look less old than one that has zero fat. A good filler is natural body fat, which is taken from other areas and then injected into the face, which is then further sculpted by the surgeon for a more natural look.

Women and men in Hollywood get fillers to banish wrinkles so, if Cruise too is doing it, he wouldn’t be the exception. However, friends are half-amused and half-worried about this obsession of his of staying young. He is, after all, 51 years old, he’s no longer a boy.

“He’s gotten terribly insecure when it comes to aging. If he were happily married, he might not care about his appearance as much. But he really does want to settle down again. The fact of the matter is, he’s attracted to younger women, so he wants to look young,” says an insider.

So perhaps he’s had his face done to start courting Elisabeth Moss?
