Family always comes first, says the actor

Tom Cruise rarely does interviews these days, be they for television or the written media. Part of the explanation for that would be that everything he says tends to be twisted and criticized by the public, mostly because of his religious beliefs that he always insists on sharing with the world. In the June 2010 issue of Esquire, though, Tom is just a father and a husband who is more than happy being asked to speak of what a wonderful family he has.

It becomes clear that the star no longer wants to talk about the past as soon as he’s asked about the now-infamous couch-jumping episode on Oprah, when he saw this as the best way to announce to the world that he was in love with current wife, Katie Holmes. However, to set the record straight, Tom says that the entire incident was twisted in the media because he only wanted Oprah and her guests to feel the same joy he was feeling, and certainly not to give way to the malicious rumors that took over shortly after it.

Then again, that’s life in the spotlight, Cruise says, adding that his relationship to Katie Holmes is also constantly plagued by rumors: but all that matters at the end of the day is to try and make it work. “Because we do live in a cynical world. It’s easy to be cynical. Making the choice not to be cynical is important. You can keep dwelling on what didn’t work, or you can figure out how to fix it. Which is what being a parent is all about. You know, I’m married to such a special woman. Every night before we go to sleep, Kate and I look at each other and it’s like, How’d we do today?” Tom says.

As for his adorable daughter Suri, Tom reveals she even plays a very important part as regards his acting job as well. “It’s come full circle. Now I’ll put Suri on a swing and tell her stories when I’m working on a script. I’ll start with the beginning of the movie and take her through the story beat by beat. Of course, I make it age-appropriate. She’s four years old. But she asks all the right questions: Why does that happen? Those are the bad guys? You’re the good guy, right?” Cruise explains.

In the same interview, the actor also speaks of how he’d entertain his family when he was just a child, which is also how he came to dream of becoming an actor. They laughed at his dreams at the time, Tom says but, if one is to venture a guess, probably they’re not laughing anymore since he’s one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.
