When Jeremy Renner was cast in “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” aka “MI 4,” word had it that it would be Tom Cruise’s last role in the franchise, and that Renner would somehow take over from him in future installments.

Deadline has confirmation that, at least for the time being, Tom Cruise isn’t going anywhere.

He’s been confirmed for the fifth film in the series.

“Ethan Hunt has accepted another mission. Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have set Tom Cruise in a deal to star in and produce a fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise,” Deadline writes.

“Both Paramount and Skydance have confirmed this, but they are not saying who’s writing and directing, or when they are targeting release,” adds the e-zine.

Christopher McQuarrie is a strong contender as director but, until official confirmation comes, we can’t know for sure.

Cruise’s most recent releases were either huge hits (“Ghost Protocol,” “Oblivion”) or so-so releases (“Jack Reacher”). Overall though, he remains a solid action star so it’s no wonder he’s not even thinking of stepping down from movies of this kind.
