The author of best-selling military thrillers like “The Hunt for Red October” and “The Sum of All Fears,” Tom Clancy, has died. He was 66 years old and passed away in a hospital in Baltimore, various media outlets confirm.

The New York Times broke the news and obtained confirmation from Clancy’s publicist. It could not offer more details on the cause of death.

Clancy was married twice but, even though his books sold millions of copies, he made sure not much about his personal life got out in the press.

Clancy’s work extended into several fields, from literature to television and gaming. He was a force to be reckoned with in the literary world, but also a very outspoken figure on the political stage.

Clancy was a supporter of the Republican Party, a Life Member of the National Rifle Association, and Vice Chairman of Community Activities and Public Affairs. However, to his readers, he will always remain an excellent writer of post-Cold War thrillers.
