Towards the beginning of May, the news that a 2-year-old girl named Hannah Warren had been fitted with an artificial windpipe in an attempt to save her life made headlines.

Unfortunately, the girl developed several complications after undergoing this groundbreaking surgery, and passed away on Saturday at the Children's Hospital in Illinois.

ABC News reports that, as Hannah's family later explained, the trachea the girl had been fitted with was performing well. The girl's lungs, on the other hand, weren't.

As they put it, the toddler's ability to breathe “went from fairly good, to weak, to poor.”

Following Hannah's death, the doctors in charge of looking after her issued the following statement:

“Following her successful, pioneering trachea transplant surgery on April 9, 2013, and despite all efforts, Hannah was unable to overcome additional health issues that were identified as her care progressed.”

“Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Warren family,” they added.
