On November 12, 1980, the man who would one day break millions of hearts and make millions of dollars with his artsy movies was born in London, Ontario, Canada: Ryan Gosling. We’ll take a moment to wish him a happy and slightly belated birthday!

Above is a tribute video featuring some of Ryan’s funniest interviews, including the one in which he read lines from the insanely popular “Hey girl” meme featuring himself, and the one in which he couldn’t stop laughing because he’d just found out that, somewhere in Canada, there’s a woman making dish towels with his face on them.

Ryan, as I probably don’t need to tell his fans, went mainstream with the romantic movie “The Notebook,” aka that movie men will never sit through but their girlfriends will always enjoy with lots of hankies at the ready.

That was in 2004. Today, Ryan already has a string of box office and critical hits under his belt, in genres ranging from comedy (“Crazy Stupid Love”) to indie drama (“Blue Valentine,” “Drive”) and action movies (“Gangster Squad”).

He’s proven he’s a solid actor and has even made his debut as a director, though we’re yet to see how that panned out for him, because “How to Catch a Monster,” for which he also wrote the script, doesn’t come out until next year.

More importantly, Ryan isn’t just a critics’ darling: he’s also an Internet celebrity and a fan-favorite, having managed to win over both women and men. Talented, smart, handsome, and funny, he’s considered one of the hottest actors in Hollywood, “the man every man wants to be, and every woman wants to be with.”

Well, that last part is a generalization that actually doesn’t do him justice; moreover, it’s one aspect of his public persona that he certainly doesn’t enjoy. To Ryan Gosling the actor, Happy Birthday!
