Princess of Pop is still here, still running this game despite what haters used to say

Thirty-two years ago today, in McComb, Mississippi, a little girl was born who would become our Pop Princess and, at the same time, one of the most mediated and, until not long, controversial celebrities of our time. Happy Birthday, Britney Jean Spears.

Britney got her start on the Mickey Mouse Club and became the hottest young pop star around in the late ‘90s, after her “Hit Me Baby One More Time” single came out. She’s been breaking music records after music records ever since.

Throughout the years, we’ve seen her change her look and sound from one album to another, we’ve seen her become a mother and go through a string of failed romances, all of which played out in the tabloids in a flurry of speculation and rumors.

Unfortunately, after seeing Britney at her highest, we’ve also seen her at her lowest, after she had a public meltdown, complete with shaving off her head, attacking paparazzi with umbrellas and crying outside her car.

She’s been hounded by the paparazzi and undoubtedly wronged a million times by malicious reports in the media but, after all of it (and much more we will never know because it happened in the privacy of her own home), Britney is still here and she’s still running this game.

Ms. Spears has often been attacked by music critics for not singing live in concert and, in recent years, for not living up to the reputation of an excellent performer she built for herself when she was just getting started with conquering the world.

She’s been vilified and, at the same time, praised for no reason other than she’s Britney Spears. I’m not saying one was better than the other or the other way around because, if there’s one thing certain, that’s the fact that Britney has staying power.

Love her or hate her, Britney Spears isn’t going anywhere.
