Toast and butter appear harmless to most people – except those who happen to be on a diet, that is – but, as a woman by the name Julie Evans recently proved, they can also be used as weapons.

What's more, when in this capacity, they can actually get their wielder in trouble with the law.

Not to beat about the bush, news from the United Kingdom says that a 45-year-old woman living in the town of Cinderford is now accused of having used toast and butter to assault her husband.

This coming July, she is to make an appearance in court and defend herself against these charges.

According to Gloucestershire Echo, the entire affair began one evening when Julie asked her husband, James, to do some chores. The latter pretended to be asleep, so the 45-year-old woman poured water over his head.

The next day, during breakfast, they once again got into a row. This time, Julie threw several pieces of toast at her husband, and also rubbed butter in his face.

At one point, things escalated and the couple, who is now divorced, ended up battling each other. During this struggle, the man's ear nearly got torn off.

Thus, doctors needed to use as many as 13 stitches to set it back in its rightful place.

“He came home from work after being away and he needed to work from home but his wife kept asking him to do things for her. He fell asleep on the sofa – he has multiple sclerosis – and Mrs Evans woke him by pouring water on him.”

“The next morning she started an argument and threw her toast at him. He left, as he felt she was being petty. She grabbed a handful of butter and smeared it over his face. He tried to rub some of it back on her. They ended up on the floor,” Theresa Perry, prosecuting, explains.

Julie Evans has admitted to using toast and butter to assault her husband, and also to pouring water over his head, media reports say.

However, she maintains that she had nothing to do with James’ ear getting torn off.

It is against this assault occasioning actual bodily harm that Julie Evans must defend herself in court later this year. The trial is scheduled to take place at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court on July 18.
