Video game developer Blizzard is saying that it has officially ceased any work related to its Titan MMO project and that it plans to focus all the resources it dedicated to it to other titles it has recently revealed.

Mike Morhaime, the chief executive officer and co-founder of the studio, tells Polygon that, although the company has never officially announced the title, it has worked on it for more than seven years in different forms.

He states, "We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs. So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn't come together."

The executive is not saying exactly how far in the development process Titan got and whether any playable version was offered to gamers outside the company to test.

He adds, "We didn't find the fun. We didn't find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that's the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no."

Chris Metzen, Blizzard's senior vice president of story and franchise development, says that the decision to cancel all work on Titan was a hard one, but the company understands how it has to deal with projects like this because it has previously abandoned titles like Warcraft Adventures and Starcraft Ghost.

A focus on new hits

Blizzard is at the moment one of the biggest companies in the world of gaming and has a number of huge titles that it is offering support for.

World of Warcraft is still the most important subscription-based MMO in the world and is set to get the Warlords of Draenor expansion in the fall of this year, with a range of new content for fans to explore.

Starcraft 2 is set to receive the Legacy of the Void installment at some point in the future, and the multiplayer side of the game is still thriving.

At the same time, Blizzard has managed to attract more than 20 million players with its free-to-play card title Hearthstone, which is getting regular updates and can easily be updated with new mechanics.

The company is also getting ready to enter the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre with Heroes of the Storm, which is currently receiving a final full wipe as it is getting out of the technical alpha stage.
