It’s easy to lose track of the calorie count over the winter holidays, but that doesn’t necessarily have to mean sure weight gain for us. Celebrity trainer Marco Borges, who lists Beyonce among his most fabulous customers, has a few, easy to follow tips.

The first recommendation Borges offers – via PopEater – is to plan ahead. As he puts it, if you know you’re heading out to a dinner party, make sure you don’t leave home on an empty stomach because that will most certainly mean you’ll overeat.

Many women believe they should starve themselves before a big event because, that way, they’ll compensate for what comes next. Borges says you should eat something before, because only this way you’ll be able to be in control of your calorie intake at said event.

For the winter holidays, one important piece of advice is to get your workout early in the morning, before other people can turn your plans upside down, which will most certainly happen, given this hectic time of the year.

If you make sure you get yourself to the gym first thing in the morning, you won’t be able to say you didn’t find the time to squeeze in an workout, and thus avoid post-holiday remorse.

“Don’t diet, live it!” Borges also recommends. Dieting is hard from several points of view, which is why it’s essential you choose a healthy lifestyle and not a restrictive eating plan.

“If you focus on dieting rather than healthy living, you feel deprived and more than likely, one of those holiday parties will have you calling it quits. Focusing on healthy living instead will give you the strength you need to see past the holidays and into the new year,” PopEater writes after speaking to Borges.

Another important piece of advice is not to let yourself go over the holidays: keep your weight under control by weighing yourself every morning, to avoid unpleasant surprises after New Year’s Eve.

“Get in the habit of weighing yourself in the morning. If you find yourself a pound or two heavier, it’s easier to correct the behavior that caused it rather than waiting until the new year to realize you’ve gained 15lbs and not only have to deal with the added weight but also the mental feelings of defeat that hold you back,” PopEater writes.

Besides all of the above, Borges also recommends getting plenty of exercise over the holidays by making sure not everything is limited to the dinner table and, of course, the food on it.

If the weather allows it, you should choose to go outside and play games with friends and family: not only will you be having lots of fun, you’ll also be working up a sweat and burning the extra calories.
