The Capture Mini uses blue LED structured-light tech

You don't really need a 3D scanner in order to build a 3D model of things, as long as you can take some photos and use a program capable of generating a three-dimensional model. Accuracy and detail is always better on a CAD scan though.

Scanners have been pretty limited in use so far, however, mostly because of the space and size limitations. For both the scanner and the objects being scanned.

While there are full-height human scanners, for example, they aren't good for anything broader than the normal human girth.

Meanwhile, smaller scanners obviously are limited to smaller objects. Also, their ability to reproduce tiny details is lower than for larger models.

There are ways around that, however, especially with the high-quality sensors of today. 3D Systems has just shown it by revealing the Capture Mini.

The 3D Systems Capture Mini 3D scanner

The device, a Geomagic Capture system in miniature form, uses blue LED structured-light scanning technology to scan small objects down to their minute details. Better yet, it can do this while sitting just fine on your desktop.

You won't have to make regular trips to your workshop or garage, or wherever else you've stashed your additive manufacturing equipment.

This is quite useful, since scans often don't get reproduced through a 3D printer exactly as they started out, something that 3D Systems took into account.

So you can, say, take a scan of an apple or little figurine with the Capture Mini, then use a CAD program (computer-aided design) to modify it to your liking. Alternatively, you can use it to simply inspect small objects, compare them to CAD designs to make sure they aren't flawed.

The specs of the Capture Mini 3D Scanner

With a precision of down to 0.34 mm, it weighs around two pounds, which is just less than a kilogram. Buying it will earn you full CAD integration, pro-pack turntable, and the ability to fine-tune smaller parts.

It should be recognized by the computer immediately, since it's described as having a plug-and-play setup. The performance is of 1 million points per scan in .3 seconds.

Currently, the 3D Systems Capture Mini scanner is on display at EuroMold 2014, at the Messe Frankfurt in booths D69 and F90 in hall 11, where it will stay until November 28. A price or exact ETA for sales hasn't been revealed. The video embedded below will provide a live introduction of the main assets of the product.
