Probably the only thing that people remember from the original “Timecop” movie is Jean Claude Van Damme sporting a wicked mullet. Other than that, there's really not much to this sci-fi action movie, but someone in Hollywood decided that it was good enough for a reboot.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Universal is handling the reboot and has already found writers for the script in the person of Mark and Brian Gunn, who have also written the script for “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.”

Marc Shmuger will act as producer for the film, after previously working on “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks” and “The Spectacular Now.” Also involved in the project will be the man who created the original comics the first movie was based on, Mike Richardson.

“Timecop” follows the time-travel adventures of a police officer fighting a sly politician who also uses time travel to aid him in his career. The movie's success with audiences in 1994 spawned a TV series, a sequel that went direct-to-video and a video game.

The reboot is going to be grittier in terms of the police story and will more than likely have updated technology, although the sci-fi part is expected to take a back seat to the action.
