Prestigious magazine presents the most atrocious looks with celebrities

Celebrities are never allowed to have a bad day, whether that refers to hair, makeup or style. Because they’re constantly in the limelight and, above all, because they make a lot of money, it is widely assumed that part of their job is also to look stunning whenever they set foot on the red carpet. This is why lists with the biggest fashion blunders are probably so much fun – and the one comprised by Time Magazine shouldn’t be an exception.

Time set out to the impressive task of comprising top 10s for everything 2009, from politics to movies and music. Of course, fashion too found a place in the magazine, with a list of the biggest faux pas of the year. Not at all surprisingly, said list finds actress Sharon Stone, known for her exquisite taste as well for her ability to make a complete mess of herself when one least expects it, putting the proverbial foot in it with a half sheer, half corset number she donned just recently.

Number nine on the Times list sees designer Marc Jacobs in a skirt. For a man who dresses millions of women around the world, this guy certainly seems to have some issues looking decent, the mag believes. “Bad outfits can happen to anyone, even Marc Jacobs, probably the most admired fashion designer in the US. Sometimes you just run out of clean pants, right? But no. This is not a one-off. Skirts became Jacobs’ thing. He had been wearing them for over a year. Sometimes with tights. He claimed they were more comfortable. But that’s only because, unlike typical skirt wearers, he saw no need to wax his legs,” Time writes.

Up next, Rihanna – again a star who is often referred to as a trendsetter, but who proves that even she is prone to making rookie mistakes, like believing a sweater can actually pass for a dress. It can’t, fashion insiders assure us. Sandra Bullock is at number 7 in a mismatched colorful number, followed close by Queen Latifah, who once made the mistake of believing spandex unitards could look good on her. Rapper Kanye West lands in at number 5 for several style mistakes he made on the night of the VMAs, from his idea of dressing up, to posing on the red carpet whiskey bottle in hand, and, lastly, of having his date and girlfriend Amber Rose dressed “as a snake.”

When Lady Gaga is not her eccentric self, she tried her hand at being normal, which lands her the number 4 spot on Times’ fashion faux pas list. Cate Blanchett is at number 3, while Drew Barrymore shows how to ruin a gorgeous Alexander McQueen look with bad hair. Not surprisingly, Mary Kate Olsen scores the top position for a very odd-looking outfit that makes her resemble an old witch more than the fashionista she’s said to be.

“When you’re an Olsen twin (this one's Mary-Kate), you’re fabulously wealthy and stylish and have several clothing lines, so you can pretty much put on whatever the hell you like. Sometimes such liberty leads to truly stunning and pioneering outfits. Other times, it leads to this. On the upside: Ashley, the other twin, now has a clear mental picture of what won’t suit her,” Time says.
