Time Hollow is a video game developed by Japanese studio Tenky and published by Konami exclusively for the Nintendo DS portable platform on March 19, 2008, in its native Japan, September 23, that same year, in North America, and February 6, 2009, in Europe.
Time Hollow is an adventure game in the style of Japanese visual novels, where players control Ethan Kairos, the protagonist of the title, as he tries to travel through time in order to alter his past and save his parents.
The title was created by designer Junko Kawano, who also worked on a similar game, Shadow of Memories, released for the PlayStation 2 a few years ago, which featured another young man using a time travel device to alter his future.
Ethan Kairos is able to use a Hollow Pen, which enables him to open circular portals into the past. Through these portals, he can recover or place various items or even characters, as well as observe just what is going on without interfering.
Even if time stops when opening a portal, some characters will be able to communicate with Ethan.
The act of drawing a portal requires players to use the Nintendo DS' touchscreen, but players must also take into account the amount of "Time" they have, a sort of health for Ethan, who must replenish it by drinking potions of time.
Like any visual novel-style video game, Time Hollow features animated cut scenes, which depict important events or flashbacks, while backgrounds are static and layered to provide a sort of 3D perspective when the player is exploring the environments.
