Calling the Apple TV product “a hobby that I couldn’t live without,” Apple’s CEO Tim Cook confirmed during yesterday’s earnings call that his company sold a record 1.4 million Apple TVs this past quarter.

In the whole fiscal 2011, 2.8 million units were sold. The figures speak clearly to Apple - the demand is there. But the Apple TV is still a hobby, and Apple is marketing and selling it as such.

Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said he still considers the device “a hobby that I couldn’t live without.”

That’s all about to change according to many analysts watching the company up close. And Tim Cook himself confirmed that Apple was still looking at every possible scenario to take over the living room.

Cook would not make any comments regarding a potential HD TV product, but he did say “We continue to pull the strings to see where it takes us.”
