Two tigers living in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India nearly lost their lives after coming face to face with a group of locals.

A few days ago, the big cats left the Pench Tiger Reserve, and strayed into a village named Chaurai.

At that time, forest employees that were supposed to monitor their movements were busy keeping a close eye on ongoing elections in the state, so Chaurai villagers decided to take matters into their own hands.

Times of India says that, while local women and children ran to protect themselves, men grabbed hold of whatever stones they found lying around and threw them at the two felines.

The tigers somehow survived the experience, and ran to safety. Once news of the incident reached authorities, forest employees were called back to the region.

“We've rushed our monitoring team to the tiger reserve to avert any untoward incident,” Kiren Bisen, deputy director of the Pench Tiger Reserve, told the press.

Furthermore, “I've sent a team to keep tabs on animal movement and take precautionary measures.”

The tigers involved in this incident have not yet been located, so it's impossible to say whether or not they have suffered any major injuries.
