The media and the Internet have been ablaze since Friday night, when golfer Tiger Woods got into a one-vehicle accident on the lawn of one of his neighbors. Speculation that the accident might have been caused by wife Elin Nordegren, with whom he reportedly got into a fight just minutes before getting behind the wheel, has been put to rest by Woods himself in a press statement posted on his official website.

The golfer, who sustained multiple lacerations on the face upon crashing into a fire hydrant and then a tree, was reportedly taken out of the car by his wife who, after hearing the noise, came out of the house to see what had happened. This is the official story and this is exactly how it happened, Woods says in the statement, thus rubbishing reports that the injuries on his face had actually been caused by his angry wife. She acted very “courageously,” the star also says and claiming otherwise means doing her a grave injustice.

“As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I’m pretty sore. This situation is my fault, and it’s obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I’m human and I’m not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn’t happen again. This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible,” Woods says in the statement.

Not only does he plan to keep the matter a private affair, but this is also the first and last time he’s going to speak out about it to set the record straight, Woods further explains. He takes full responsibility for the accident and, at the same time, stresses that, if anything, the media should be praising his wife instead of bringing against her such serious accusations as that of domestic violence is.

“The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false. This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me. I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. But, I would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be,” Woods concludes by saying.

The police investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, as well as how it played out, is still underway.
