Tiger Woods will not only face compatriot rival Phil Mickelson in the British Open. I mean, as expected as the Americans clash will be, there's nothing for the English fans to enjoy more than a rivalry between Tiger Woods and Nick Faldo. Everybody that knows a little bit about the golfing world knows that the two sportsmen don't quite get along. And the destiny has brought them once again competing against each other in the first two rounds of the British Open this week.
And it would be the right time for Woods to come back into action, since a loss to rival Nick
Faldo will probably be more embarrassing that missing another cut in his career. After the US Open disaster, nobody is willing to bet on the American for the European tournament. Still, Woods managed to get some respect back from his colleagues 2 weeks ago, when he finished 2nd in the Western Open.
This year, the American will seek his 3rd British Open triumph. In the meantime, he will have to defend it as well, since he won last year's competition in a pretty convincing way, 5 strokes ahead of his next opponent. Still, with how things are looking right now, I'd say there's little chance of that happening again. Nick Faldo will certainly take care of that.
"I've only played with him two times since I've been a pro and there wasn't a lot of talking. I'll be in my world trying to compete and win the championship and I'm sure he'll probably do the same thing", stated Woods, one day before the tournament gets under way. Even if he tried to be as fair-play as possible, the American admitted that the two don't really talk after Faldo criticized his swing in a TV show earlier last year.
More, Woods stated that he will be pretty surprised if the Englishman would come to speak to him during the tournament. When questioned about this whole issue, Faldo seemed pretty bored, stating that: "I'll shock him. I'll babble away all day". Well, we are sure waiting to see what the two players are made of starting Thursday afternoon.
