Here are the three most-voted requests for Windows 10

With the focus almost entirely on the desktop, Windows 10 Technical Preview, no matter the build number, also brought us some improvements for the built-in File Explorer, the file manager that has been around forever and renamed in Windows 8.

File Explorer now comes with some subtle refinements here and there, including new icons and a share option that allows you to make the most of this particular feature in Microsoft’s modern operating system.

But despite these improvements, users actually expect the company to implement much more significant updates to File Explorer for two different reasons: one – to make the application more powerful and easier to use, and two – to give it a chance against the other third-party file managers on the market.

At this point, there’s no indication that Microsoft might actually revamp File Explorer from the ground up before Windows 10 hits the market, but requests published in the Feedback app on the new OS provide us with a short glimpse of what users want to see improved in the coming months.

Tabs, tabs, tabs

One of the most-requested features for File Explorer has always been support for tabs, as other third-party apps on the market that are designed to help users manage their files already come with such functionality.

Microsoft often ignored feedback for File Explorer, but given the fact that Windows 10 is all about building an operating system for users, chances are that such a feature could actually be implemented in a future update.

At this point, tab support is the number one requested feature for File Explorer, followed by updated icons “for a unified look.” The user who posted this suggestion explained that “Windows Vista icons still exist in the ribbon” and this is actually very true.

Metro-like menu options

The third most-requested feature call is for Microsoft to “unify the design of all right-click menus,” as the ones of the desktop look really old and can’t be compared to the ones available in the Modern UI. Of course, not everyone would agree with this, especially when taking into account the criticism received by Microsoft after the introduction of the Metro UI, so this might not actually see daylight anytime soon.

“The normal ones on the desktop look horribly outdated and should get the design of those from the Modern UI,” the user who posted this explained.

The three most-demanded features for Windows 10’s File Explorer currently have more than one thousand votes, so there’s no doubt that Microsoft is at least looking at these requests.
