In some countries, cows can only expect to have people stare at them in amazement, maybe even let out one or two tears, after they have been turned into burgers and placed between two buns alongside tomatoes, cheese and whatnot.

In India, however, cows are traditionally considered sacred. Thus, several local myths are centered on them, and people believe that, with their help, they can become better connected to the gods.

Earlier this month, a three-eyed cow was born in a remote village in this part of the world, and the news of this miraculous birth spread like wildlife among locals, who are now flocking to pray to it.

Meet Shiva, the thee-eyed cow

Media reports say that the young cow, pictured next to this article, was born in the village of Kolathur in the state of Tamil Nadu about two weeks ago. Its rightful owner is a man named Rajesh, who admits that he was quite shocked when he first laid eyes on it.

Both Rajesh and people living in Kolathur and in nearby villages are convinced that this calf is the reincarnation of a god named Lord Shiva. This deity is usually depicted as having three eyes, hence the decision to name the young cow after it.

“This calf is born with the third eye, so we believe Shiva, a god who has three eyes, has been born here,” a villager named Sharmila told the press in a recent interview, as cited by International Business Times.

“Not just us, but everyone from our village and nearby districts visited this place. It's our god,” Sharmila went on to comment on people's fascination with this bizarre cow born in the village of Kolathur in Tamil Nadu.

Local myths say that, when upset, Lord Shiva simply opens its third eye and has the flames coming out of it burn everything in its surrounding to ashes. Luckily, the calf does not appear to possess such magical powers.

Why pray to a three-eyed cow?

Since the three-eyed calf is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Shiva, locals expect that, by praying to it, they will get in the god's good graces. Thus, they hope that, after saying their prayers to this cow, the deity will start taking better care of them and their families.

“This is a miracle calf, so we are worshiping and praying to it like a god,” Sharmila told the press. “We believe if we worship this calf it will give good luck for us and the people around us,” he added. Not at all surprisingly, the young cow doesn't seem to get what all the fuss is about.
