It seems that Belgium is home to some serious gamers, as the country recently held a special competition where three players endured a marathon gaming session that lasted for 109 hours, setting a new world record.

The competition was organized by GUNKtv, a local gaming-dedicated TV station, and hosted, initially, 20 gamers in the contest.

Slowly but surely, only three remained, since the beginning on Saturday, December 18, until Wednesday, December 22, who played Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood on the Xbox 360 for 109 hours straight.

"Three gamers, Tony Desmet from Turnhout, Jesse Rebman from Ekeren and Jeffrey Gammon from Gent, survived the hard competition. They gave all they had and showed the world that they are absolute world record holders in gaming. Their names will soon be written in the one and only Guinness Book of World Records."

The gamers, for all their efforts, also went home with 1,500 Euros each, an Xbox 360 console, a Steel Series headset and vouchers for 125 euros worth of gaming-related accessories.

This new record crushed the previous one, held by a group of Dutch gamers, who played for "just" 25 hours straight.

“We are very happy with this competition and the phenomenal result. As organization we are happy that the twenty gamers and the final three winners have set an extraordinary accomplishment, respected worldwide by other gamers and young adults,” said Stefan Devroey, the CEO of GUNKtv.

Before you start worrying about health risks, Guinness regular procedures demand for breaks during activities every few hours, in order to protect the health of the participants involved in the world record attempt.

Still, their achievement is extremely impressive, as Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, a pretty long game by today's standards, won't keep someone entertained for over 100 hours, no matter how many collectibles are found or multiplayer matches are played.
