Countless female celebrities are now involved in the biggest leak of private photos in recent times, after a hacker targeted their iCloud accounts and posted very intimate, most of the times raunchy photos of these stars online.

While the leak has opened the debate on the topic of violation of privacy and voices online are urging regular folks at home not to look at the photos because, if they did, they would become part of the problem, authorities are looking into the matter in order to find the person responsible for this.

Meanwhile, the celebrities thus exposed are making a stand, either to confirm that the photos are real by lamenting the breach of privacy, or to distance themselves from the whole mess by admitting that the pics are fake / doctored.

Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney is in the latter category, together with model Victoria Justice and singer and actress Ariana Grande. In the former, we find Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton and actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Some time after the leak, Maroney took to Twitter to set the record straight: she initially had no intention of saying anything but it became necessary for her to do so when things got out of control and people were driving her crazy with questions on whether the photos were real or not.

So there you have it, straight from her mouth / finger tips: “the fake photos of me are crazy!! was trying to rise above it all, and not give ‘the creator’ the time of day.. BUT..,” she writes, adding a photo of Jesus giving the thumbs up, with the caption, “you sir need Jesus.”

“shout out to my fans for defending me all day long.. even when things got weird u stood by me. and that meant the world,” McKayla adds, choosing to see the silver lining to this cloud.

Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton can’t say the same thing, because, in their case, it could very well be that there is no silver lining. Their publicists released statements to say that they had alerted the police and would sue anyone posting or linking to the illegally obtained photos.

Mary E. Winstead is angry too, but we don’t know yet if she’s taking any kind of legal action as well. She too tweeted about this, blaming as much the person who leaked the photos as those who are looking at them online. You can see her original message embedded under the one from the Olympic gymnast.
