Despite getting mostly mixed reviews, this weekend’s winner at the US and international box office is undoubtedly “Thor” from director Kenneth Branagh. “Fast Five” also continued its winning streak, holding tight to number 2, despite new releases.

“Thor” premiered this Friday, with ticket sales of $25.7 million in the US, Deadline reports. The film continued to bring audiences in theaters for the rest of the weekend, which can’t but be good news for Marvel.

In the US, “Thor” made $66 million over the weekend, while the global cume was of $242 million: not bad at all for a film whose lead was a virtual unknown until he took his shirt off for the first promo video for the film a while back.

Though some critics have pointed out that perhaps Chris Hemsworth is the weakest link in “Thor” (which is ironic since he plays the God of Thunder himself), it would seem that audiences loved him enough to make the film the top dog at the US box office over the weekend.

Number 2 goes to another testosterone-packed production, “Fast Five” with Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which is the fifth and the biggest opening in the “Fast and Furious” franchise.

“The -62% domestic drop was primarily due to the loss of all IMAX screens and large-format screens which had only been booked for one week. But abroad Fast Five is the No. 1 film in the world for the second week in a row and the biggest international weekend in Universal’s history,” Deadline notes.

New release “Jumping the Broom” opened to $13.7 million, while at number 4 we find another newcomer, the much-mediated rom-com “Something Borrowed,” that only managed to gross $13.1 million.

“Rio 3D” made another $8.2 million over the weekend, to a cume of $114 million. “Water for Elephants” with Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz is at number 6, with a total gross so far of $41.6 million.

The rest of the movies at the top 10 in the US box office are: “Madea’s Big Happy Family” ($3.9 million), “Prom” ($2.4 million), “Soul Surfer” ($2.1 million), and “Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs. Evil” ($1.8 million).
