Will Marvel be replacing him as Thor in the film franchise as well?

The other day, Marvel announced that, come this fall, their new Thor comic book series would see a female Thor wielding the Mjölnir, in a move that shocked and outraged fans because, they believe, Marvel should have just created a new female character and not ruin an old and beloved one.

A change in a comic book series, as drastic as this one might be, doesn’t necessarily imply a change in the film franchise inspired by it, but that’s not stopping fans from wondering out loud about Marvel’s plans for Chris Hemsworth.

The handsome Aussie played Thor in two standalone movies so far and 1 “Avengers” film, with another scheduled for release in May 2015. Marvel doesn’t comment on their talent’s contracts, but word has it that Chris is still locked in for at least 2 more movies, a third “Thor” and a third “Avengers” installment.

Asked how the change in the comics would impact the film franchise, Chris D’Lando, PR for Marvel, tells Time magazine: “We do the best stories as we can, and whatever Marvel Studios wants to co-opt for their franchises, they do it, and we’re happy to help them with that. But right now we’re focusing that Jason [Alonso]’s story is the best and biggest it can be.”

In plain-speak, they’re not yet ready to discuss the future of the film franchise. That leaves the door open for fans to speculate to their heart’s content and, right now, the most popular theory is that Hemsworth is probably out of the picture once his contract expires.

Marvel has already planted the seeds of another major change at the end of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which allows them to replace Steve Rogers with the Winter Soldier as the Captain, so they might pull a similar move with Hemsworth.

After all, Chris Evans, who plays Rogers / Captain America, did say that he would not be with Marvel for an eternity, and we’re to expect Hemsworth too will want out at some point. With the change in the comic books, he is provided with an easy way out and his responsibilities as God of Thunder will pass on to another actor.

Because Thor is female in the comic books, Marvel could hire a woman for future Thor film installments too. Granted, this is very far down the road (2018, if not even later) and, by the time it happens (if it does happen), we might have already grown tired of Hemsworth in this role and welcome the change.

Just kidding. Who could ever get tired of this?
