“Hung” actor flexes his muscles, insists he’s just an average guy

As a norm, actors have to work hard to get in top shape, especially when they’re doing a superhero (or otherwise physically challenging) movie like “The Punisher.” Six years after this film, Thomas Jane, now starring in HBO’s “Hung,” continues to remain in excellent shape, which is more than obvious in the stunning spread featured in the June / July 2010 issue of Men’s Fitness.

Photos from the shoot are not yet out, but, until they emerge, fans can check out the video embedded at the end of the article, in which the actor does what may seem like pretty impossible exercises for the regular Joe with as much ease as if they were nothing but a piece of cake. In all fairness, Jane admits in the accompanying interview (as cited by Canoe), all the hard training he’s received for the movies he’s made even helped him once in a life-threatening incident.

“I was cruising down the sidewalk and started fishtailing from side to side. I raced by this guy and went, ‘Woo-o-o-o-o.’ He turned and I started showing off – and the skateboard started to hydroplane and spin out. I flew off the board, tucked my shoulder, hit the ground, did a 360-degree flip, and landed on my feet. If it weren’t for my training, it could have been a hell of a lot worse,” the actor recalls.

He has personal trainer Christine Hazelton to thank for making working out fun for him, otherwise he might have stopped whatever training he was having after he was done with a movie. “She turned [the gym] into a science – the mystery of how your body actually grows a muscle, the meditative aspect of lifting weights and working through the pain,” he says. Jane also reveals that his biggest secret is allowing himself one major cheat. “On the day I would wrap a movie, my old ritual was to have a six-pack of Guinness and half a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts waiting in my trailer. That was my reward,” he adds.

In the same interview, Thomas also explains how he trained for the HBO film “61*” while also insisting he’s just an average guy who just happened to strike lucky to become famous. That’s not to say, though, that he’s forgotten his humble beginnings. Below is the video of Thomas Jane flexing his muscles for the Men’s Fitness photoshoot. Enjoy.
