“Dream:ON is the app to influence your dreams” according to British Psychology Professor Richard Wiseman, who enlisted the help of iOS development studio Yuza to submit the app to the iTunes App Store.

The app lets users indicate the type of dream they’d like to experience and when they want to wake up. Users then place the iPhone on their bed and go to sleep. Dream:ON begins to monitor your sleep pattern, by sensing when the user moves and stops moving.

When the app senses that users are dreaming, it plays a carefully-designed 'SoundScape' to help create the desired effect (dream).

Prof. Wiseman hopes to attract 10,000 participants to play their part in creating the world's largest dreaming experiment.

Wiseman, a professor at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, southern England, said, "Getting a good night's sleep and having pleasant dreams boosts people's productivity and is essential for their psychological and physical well-being. Despite this, we know very little about how to influence dreams. This experiment aims to change that."

Wiseman added: "We have created a new way of carrying out mass participation experiments. We still know relatively little about the science of dreaming and this app may provide a real breakthrough in changing how we dream, and record and track those dreams."

Dream:ON is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad and requires iOS 5.0 or later.

Users must not lock their device’s screen, as it will turn off automatically, developers say. It is also recommended to keep the device on charge, according to the list of requirements. Finally, a disclaimer: “The application will not work with Tempura or any other 'foam' mattresses.”
