San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer appears to be a big fan of anniversaries. So much that he has decided to make this year's March the official “SeaWorld San Diego Month” as a means to celebrate the marine park's turning 50.

Ecorazzi tells us that, apart from honoring SeaWorld in this totally unexpected manner, Mayor Kevin Faulconer has also credited the marine park for doing an absolutely wonderful job looking after animals, supporting research projects, and educating the public about how important it is to protect wildlife.

Thus, it would appear that the San Diego mayor's exact words on the matter at hand were that Sea World must be appreciated for “rescuing and caring for animals, conducting research, educating students and employing youth.”

Not at all surprisingly, quite a lot of people failed to agree with Kevin Faulconer on this topic, and were quick to point out that, instead of being honored, SeaWorld should be ordered to close and free the animals it keeps captive without delay.

Thus, in a statement, Katie Arth, a member of green group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), argued that, “Mayor Faulconer should be condemning SeaWorld for its cruel treatment of orcas and other animals, not celebrating its greed.”
