Its magnetic arm can be placed in various positions, for optimum visibility

Shape-changing devices are always fun to look at, even when their shapeshifting capabilities are limited, like for the Jella lamp.

Invented by Lena Schlumbohm from the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, it was meant as a proof of concept for her bachelor thesis but might end up as something more.

After all, it won third prize at international furnishings show IMM Cologne, and is also up on designboom. Maybe someone will buy the concept.

How does it work? The black stand is just that: a steel stand. The aluminum stick is the important part, since it sticks to the stand via magnets (so you can put it anywhere and in any position) and light is produced by LEDs.

It can look like a glowstick and, in addition to the unusual aesthetics, can aim light in any direction.
