This is all you need to sweep up all those metal shavings

Metal shavings might not be a problem for the common man, but metal, mechanical and electronics workshops sometimes end up littered with them.

And because it's not exactly ideal to use a common vacuum cleaner for them, someone invented a special vacuum.

The concept is simple really. Take any large, plastic container, cut it below the “neck” so to speak, drop a magnet inside and voila! Everything will gather up and stick to the underside, which it can easily be swept off.

It reminds me of the times I played with metal shavings on a piece of paper. I would move a magnet beneath the paper and watch the (much smaller) shavings stream around, standing on end.

Of course, you'll have to get a big enough magnet for yourself. Not too hard for anyone who owns an old, large speaker system of some sort.
