Publisher Square Enix has released a few videos showing how Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition looks on the PlayStation 4 home console.

The open-world action-adventure video game was initially released on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and now developer United Front Games has decided to enhance the acclaimed title and launch it on next-gen systems too.

The videos offer gamers a closer look at some of the in-game cutscenes, at fighting, as well as showing a high-speed drive around town, highlighting some of the numerous visual improvements in the upcoming next-gen remaster, including the gorgeous, native 1080p resolution and the wealth of details in the game world.

The videos show the game looking great, but underneath all the shiny veneer, the last-gen roots are still clearly visible. However, the game had pretty solid visuals to begin with, so gamers who didn't get to experience all the Hong Kong-based crime drama back in 2012 will still get a fun and engaging experience nonetheless.

Crouching cops, hidden badges

Sleeping Dogs follows the story of Wei Shen, an undercover police officer on a mission to infiltrate a Triad organization in Hong Kong.

The open-world action of the video game together with the unique and exotic locales made the game an instant hit with fans, and the parkour and martial arts elements cemented its grip on gamers.

Players can complete assignments in order to continue the story, but they can also wander around the city and engage in various legal or illegal activities. You can navigate the streets of Hong Kong by running, jumping or climbing over obstacles, swimming, and driving cars, motorcycles and even boats.

As you play through the campaign or engage in side-missions, you earn experience points which can be used to unlock cosmetic items and various new perks and abilities that enhance gameplay.

Exciting story, engaging gameplay

Sleeping Dogs' complex melee combat system, consisting of attacks, timed counters and grappling, was compared to the one in the Batman: Arkham series from Rocksteady Studios, and was lauded by both players and critics.

The campaign story, enhanced by performances from notable actors such as Lucy Liu, Emma Stone or Tom Wilkinson, together with the charming and authentic depiction of a fictionalized Hong Kong, were also among the many reasons the game was so successful.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is coming to PC, the Xbox One home console from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 home entertainment system from Sony, on October 10 in Europe and October 14 in North America.
