UK-based designer combines iOS 7 with OS X, creates amazing concept

Apple is on track to ship new versions of its mobile and desktop OSes this fall, but while iOS 7 comes with a striking redesign, OS X Mavericks is getting very few aesthetic pleasantries.

A guy like Stu Crew probably wanted more from this year’s OS X upgrade. The UK-based designer thought up a concept of OS X featuring numerous flat UI elements, many borrowed from iOS 7 itself.

According to the designer, “In order to visualise the new style on a Mac screen [he] recreated several elements and applied them to several programs.”

“Created to explore the idea of an updated OS X, this is just a update of looks with a few new functions taken from both the iPhone and iPad,” says Crew.

We could do without some iOS 7 design elements, as many Apple fans already agree, but everything Jony Ive did for the mobile software seems to work like a charm for OS X.

Stu’s concept shows not only that Apple is onto something with its new flat graphics, but also that OS X could use a bit of redesigning as well.

He goes to describe some of the redesigned features in OS X, starting with the desktop.

“At first glance the desktop is familiar. The functionality hasn't changed (ignore the missing dock) and now has the iOS 7 style. Flat windows with border-less icons look clean and sophisticated matching the translucent menu bar, all with Helvetica Neue for text.”

Stu continues with a heavily altered Finder featuring iOS 7 iconography for the various buttons found in the tool bar and side bar, a simplified Contacts app and a much flatter Calculator, a fresh Notes application, a re-imagined Notification Center, and a full-screen Spotlight.

Stu Crew’s OS X “Ivericks” also includes Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant from iOS. Check out the gallery below for more OS X "Ivericks" goodness.
