And it would sell in the millions, should it look exactly like this

Apple sells its products on features as much as it does on design. In fact, design has been the key sales driver for most of the company’s iDevices, and the iPad mini is clear evidence of that.

So when we stumbled upon these jaw-dropping mockups of a “cheap” iPhone inspired by the translucent G3 iMac, we thought to ourselves, “this is it!”

Apple could equip this phone with everything the iPhone 5 has and sell it a lot cheaper by doing away with the pricey aluminum shell and the manufacturing costs that go into machining and micron-grade polishing.

To be frank, I’d much rather have an iPhone 5 that looks like this, than the one I’m currently wielding. The case is scratched like it’s been through World War II, and the Sleep/Wake button has become completely unusable.

For a phone that costs $700 / €700 to own, I’d expect much higher quality. No wonder China’s up in arms over Apple’s repair/warranty policies.

Let’s hope these mockups do materialize into a much more reliable and cheaper iPhone 5S.
