All it takes to figure out that Valentine’s Day will soon be upon us is come face to face with the teddy bears and the plushy heart toys now populating stores by the hundreds for a split second.

The thing is that, as it turns out, we have much more than Valentine’s Day to look forward to this month. Thus, come February 13, environmental group Sea Shepherd will celebrate its second annual World Love for Dolphins Day.

The celebration will boil down to a heck lot of protests

Sea Shepherd conservationists explain that, on February 13, protests against Japan's brutal dolphin hunts will be held in front of Japanese embassies and consulates not just in the US but also overseas.

The environmentalists say that these upcoming protests are intended to honor the marine mammals that have so far been killed by fishermen in Taiji, a town located in Japan's Wakayama Prefecture, and raise awareness of how brutal the dolphin hunts organized in this corner of the world annually are.

“On ‘World Love for Dolphins Day,’ the voices of thousands of people around the world will join with Sea Shepherd and our Cove Guardians as we stand up and say, ‘Dolphins do not belong to Japan,” Sea Shepherd Senior Cove Guardian Campaign Leader Melissa Sehgal said.

Celebrities will also take part in these demonstrations

Environmental group Sea Shepherd is happy to announce that actress Shannen Doherty, star of hit television series “Charmed” and “Beverly Hills, 90210,” is to be present at the protest set to be held in front of the Japanese consulate in Los Angeles, US.

The same demonstration is to be attended by Sam Simon, co-creator of “The Simpsons,” “Haven” star Eric Balfour, and actor Ross McCall, best known for his appearances in the miniseries “Band of Brothers” and the TV show “Crash.”

Truth be told, it's unlikely that Japan will anytime soon cease slaughtering dolphins simply because a bunch of people really want it to stop and are ready and willing to spend a few hours hanging about Japanese embassies and consulates just to show how much they despise this practice.

Still, there is no doubt that organizing such protests sure beats doing absolutely nothing to end the brutal dolphin hunts that play out in Taiji, Japan, each year. Who knows, Sea Shepherd’s demonstrations might actually hit home one day.
