The car is the work of Italian hairstylist Maria Lucia Mugno, who spent hours on end sewing strands on her Fiat 500

44-year-old Maria Lucia Mugno is the proud owner of the world's hairiest car. The vehicle, a Fiat 500, is almost entirely covered in strands of human hair that the Italian woman herself collected and sewed on its seats, steering wheel dashboard and exterior.

To get a better idea of why it was that folks with Guinness World Records saw fit to crown this woman's Fiat 500 the hairiest car ever to take to the road, have a look at the photo gallery below. Brain damage guaranteed.

How it all started

The 44-year-old Italian hairstylist's car did not always look this freaky. On the contrary, it looked nothing different to your run-of-the-mill Fiat 500 at the time it left the factory where it was assembled. In fact, it probably had no idea what would come to happen to it.

According to Oddity Central, Maria Lucia Mugno decided to cover her car in human hair after one of her friends dared her to do it. More precisely, the woman was told that she wasn't courageous and skilled enough to completely alter the Fiat 500's appearance.

By the looks of it, this 44-year-old is one of those people who do things not necessarily because they want to, but to prove to others that nothing is too much for them to handle. Hence the fact that she soon completed the project.

It is understood that this Italian stylist's car was first crowned the world's hairiest back in 2010. Over the past few years, the woman added another 20 kilograms (44 pounds) worth of human hair strands to the vehicle, and not too long ago, the Fiat 500 was once again announced to be the world's hairiest car.

These 20 kilograms of human hair that the 44-year-old added to her car are arranged in such a way that they resemble the shape of a butterfly and sit on top of the car. According to Maria Lucia Mugno, her downright bizarre hair butterfly symbolizes freedom and peace.

Due to the fact that human hair strands are not exactly easy to come by and are, therefore, quite expensive, the car too is quite valuable. More precisely, this freakishly hairy Fiat 500 is estimated to be worth about $100,000 (€79,154).

The car is fully functional

Mind you, this odd vehicle is not just for show. On the contrary, it is fully functional, and the 44-year-old hairstylist who created it is anything but shy about using it to run errands and visit friends or family. In fact, she quite enjoys driving it around.

Needless to say, the car draws loads of attention whenever it takes to the road. To make sure that it's always in good condition, Maria Lucia Mugno brushes it on a regular basis. Seeing how this car is pretty much drowning in hair, chances are that one such brushing session lasts at least a couple of hours.
