Adam is a labrador whose hair falls and whose skin gets covered in blisters if it spends too much time around people

It's common knowledge that some people are allergic to dogs. Still, few would ever suspect that dogs too risk becoming sick if they spend too much time hanging around humans.

Adam, the labrador pictured next to this article, is one such unlucky pooch that, as weird as this may sound, is very much allergic to people. In fact, this condition is the reason why its body is covered in blisters and balding spots in this photo.

How can a dog be allergic to people?

Adam was not too long ago found by Robin Herman, who works at the Lucky Dog Retreat Rescue center in Indianapolis, US. The pooch was in fairly poor shape, and despite their best intentions, Robin and colleagues failed to help it feel better.

Admittedly, all the love and attention Adam got at Lucky Dog Retreat Rescue helped it gain some weight and become a wee more active and trusting.

“We fed him the best possible food, got him flea free, gave him baths twice a week, special baths from the vet,” rescuer Robin Herman told the press in an interview, as cited by Oddity Central.

Still, despite receiving proper care for several months, the dog was still covered in blisters and its hair refused to grow. Hoping to figure out what was causing these symptoms, Robin Herman eventually had a vet run some blood tests.

It was thus revealed that Adam was allergic to human dander, which is basically teeny tiny particles that us humans shed from our skin pretty much every minute of our lives.

“We still couldn't figure out what was wrong, so we took him in for a blood test. I didn't believe her [the vet] at first. I thought she was kidding,” Robin Herman detailed her reaction to this most peculiar diagnosis.

Adam’s allergy to humans is so bad that, if the pooch cuddles or plays with its caretakers, its hair starts falling off and blisters start forming all over its body. Even worse, the dog cannot help but scratch and bite itself in a desperate attempt to feel better.

A possible cure for Adam's condition

Not willing to give up on this black labrador, Robin Herman and a vet are now trying to help the pooch overcome this bizarre condition. Apparently, the vet is confident that the dog will manage to recover.

As part of its treatment, Adam will have to be given regular injections. The goal is to teach its body to tolerate the particles that are causing its allergic reaction. Hopefully, the treatment will work and the pooch will soon be able to be around people without fearing blisters and skin inflammation.

“He’s smart, he learns, knows a bunch of commands, he’s a great dog,” Robin Herman explained her decision to try and treat Adam. “It’s not his fault. We raised as much money as we could and we’re not going to stop until he’s better. The vet seems to think we can fix him,” she added.
