“TRON: Legacy” came out in December 2010 and was the sequel to the 1982 cult hit “Tron.” For the past 4+ years, we’ve been hearing a lot of rumors about Disney’s plans to make a threequel, which at one point was even believed to be called “Tr3n.”

Nothing came out of those, so officially, the studio is yet to announce a sequel to “Legacy,” except for the post-release interviews in which they said they were thinking of one but never really confirmed it.

In Hollywood, letting this much time go by between installments of the same franchise means knowingly decreasing the odds of box office success for the film in question. At the same time, it is difficult to believe Disney would let the “Tron” franchise die down, especially when “Legacy” was a commercial hit.

It might not have been very well received by all film critics, and it might not have had the success Disney was counting on, but it did well enough to warrant a sequel.

According to RopeOfSilicon, this is finally happening this year: the third installment in the franchise will go into production in October this year and will be shooting through February 2016, after which it will go into post-production.

Allegedly, it will be called “TRON: Ascension” and will see director Joseph Kosinski (“Legacy,” “Oblivion”) return at the helm. Garrett Hedlund is also believed to reprise his role in the 2010 release, but no word yet if Olivia Wilde is also on board.

As for the direction “Ascension” might take, consider what Kosinski said many years ago about his thoughts for a follow-up: “the fundamental idea of the movie is something I’m very excited about, it delivers on the ideas that we set up in Legacy, especially at the end in the last five minutes.”
