Apple has never called the fifth generation of iPods a "video iPod," and it has always been marketed as an iPod with video playback capabilities at no extra cost. Then, a week ago, one of Apple's patents was uncovered that detailed the implementation of a touch sensitive screen in the controlling of a digital device. One of the examples given was that of a virtual clickwheel that would not be physically present
but software based and controlled exactly like the one present on the current iPods.
Not surprisingly, ThinkSecret has published a report, based as usual on information from their reliable sources, which details the new upcoming iPod, the real 'video iPod', with a 3.5-inch diagonal display and no clickwheel.
It seems that the device has been in development even before the fifth generation of iPods with video playback capabilities became available. The screen will occupy the entire front face of the device and the controls will be digitalized, a virtual clickwheel appearing when the user touches the screen and disappearing when the finger is removed.
The capacity of the new model has not been revealed as of yet, and neither has the release date, but the ThinkSecret sources would place it somewhere in late March or early April. The timeline is plausible as this year, on the 1st of April, Apple celebrates their 30th anniversary as a company, and everyone expects Apple to mark the occasion by doing something big.
One thing that the ThinkSecret sources were very clear on though is the fact that this new iPod, like all the ones before it will lack any sort of wireless connectivity, following the current models in the use of conventional cables.
