Think Happy Thoughts, Be Youthful and Beautiful

Keeping positive about our physical appearance can translate into more youthful looks for longer

Botox, fillers, plastic surgery and anti-ageing creams might be all the rage right now, but they amount to nothing if compared with the easiest and most convenient method of maintaining our youthful looks. According to neuro-linguistic programming expert and television commentator Nikki Owen, speaking with the Daily Mail, if we keep on telling ourselves only good things and think happy thoughts about our appearance, we’re bound to look much younger.

Described as “Britain’s leading charisma expert,” Owen claims saying to ourselves only good things can make all the difference in terms of our appearance, something not even the most expensive and mediated cream or lotion can achieve. A simple test to prove this has been created and conducted by many women – with the same result in all, namely that kind words truly do work wonders even with wrinkles and other signs of old age.

“I’ve long been trying to impress on people the impact our thinking has on physical appearance. Each of us has the power within ourselves to create the life we want – not just a career and all the trappings, but also our looks. Cut an apple in two, put one half in a jar, label it ‘love’ and say kind things to it for a week. Then place the other half in a jar marked ‘hate’ and be as spiteful as you like to it. At the end of the week, the hated part will be in a considerably worse state of decay than the half that was the subject of your affections,” Owen tells the Mail.

Indeed, photos of two halves of the same apple seem to indicate that she’s right. Her theory is based on the work of Japanese scientist Dr. Masaru Emoto, who believed molecules in water crystals in our body could be shaped by our thoughts. Ironically enough, though this might sound a bit “bonkers,” as the Mail puts it, Owen’s theory is not entirely meritless, the same publication goes on to say, citing cosmetic doctor Dr. Patrick Bowler.

“In a broad sense, I agree with what she says. There have been many studies looking at the effects of positive thinking on the immune systems of people with diseases such as cancer. Those who are positive seem to fare much better than those who are miserable and give up. More work needs to be done, but it’s true that if you feel positive about yourself you are likely to look more radiant and therefore more youthful. Being happy and positive is only one part of looking younger, though. Your diet, lifestyle and genetics will always play a part,” Dr. Bowler explains.
