Ron Gilbert, the game maker best known for creating a range of classic adventure titles, and Garry Winninck, a main LucasArts developer, announce that they are seeking fan support in order to create a new title called Thimbleweed Park, which is designed to offer classic adventure game mechanics and will serve as a spiritual sequel to the classic Maniac Mansion.

The game will tell a mystery story which starts in a park where a body is discovered floating in a river and police fail to get any adequate leads in their hunt for the culprit. The tone of the title will be comic, with a wide range of puzzles thrown in for gamers to deal with.

The official Kickstarter announcement about the title says that the two game developers are aiming to put together a vibrant world and some cool characters, while creating an overall experience that will satisfy fans of classic titles in the adventure genre.

They add, “With five playable characters, multiple endings, deliciously retro 2D graphics, classic verb-based point & click gameplay, inventory items, and a bizarre comedy storyline swaddled around a grisly murder, Thimbleweed Park is the game that might have immediately followed Maniac Mansion if only Ron hadn't gone off on a pirate kick.”

Apparently, the Kickstarter effort for Thimbleweed Park has already managed to gain more than 100,000 dollars (76,000 Euro) in funding, with the target amount set at 375,000 dollars (245,000 Euro).

There are 29 more days during which fans of the genre can contribute.

Thimbleweed Park benefits from solid game developer pedigree
