Police officers in Florida, US, are now on the hunt for a truckload of mozzarella. Literally. The cheese has been missing since Saturday, when it was stolen by a group of unidentified thieves who simply got behind the wheel of a delivery truck and drove off.

The mozzarella was reported stolen the day following the theft, on Sunday. Despite doing their best to get it back, it looks like the officers investigating this incident are, for the time being at least, clueless about its whereabouts.

Unless somebody threw an insane pizza party sometime over these past couple of days, the cheese might still be alive, pleading with its aggressors and waiting to be saved. One can only hope that authorities will find it and rescue it before it is too late.

How this odd theft occurred

The delivery trailer packing about $85,000 (nearly €80,000) worth of shredded mozzarella that was stolen this past Saturday was en route to a Hungry Howie's Pizza distribution hub in central Florida, The Inquisitr informs.

At the time it was hijacked, it was parked at a truck stop in Summerfield, a community in Marion County. The driver and his girlfriend say that they only left it unattended for a few hours. During this time, they had a mechanic check the truck.

Except for the Hulk, nobody can pull a delivery trailer full of mozzarella behind them. Hence, it's safe to assume that the thieves had a truck of their own and used it to steal the cheese without anyone noticing.

Then again, seeing how a lorry used to transport goods and animals also went missing on Saturday from the same truck stop where the mozzarella was last seen, perhaps the thieves stole not just the cheese but also their escape vehicle.

Authorities ask that anyone who knows anything about the incident or about where the shredded cheese was taken by its abductors contact them immediately and help them solve this most bizarre case.

Stranger things have happened

Apart from money, all sorts of gizmos and the like, it appears that food counts itself among the things most often stolen. Some take food that does not belong to them because they are terribly hungry, others steal it hoping to sell it to restaurants or other folks and make some cash.

For instance, it was in late November 2014 that a woman in the US was accused of having stolen a whole lot of sausage meat from her employer. The woman took the meat not for herself, but looking to give it to a man in exchange for money she had borrowed from him.
