14 DAY TRIAL // Last year, in May, Beyonce became positively smitten with the work of French artist and designer Thierry Mugler, after seeing what he had done for the “Superheroes” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. As a matter of fact, the singer was so impressed with the creations that she contracted Mugler to be the creative designer for her international tour, which is about to kick off in Canada.
Now, the first designs that Mugler created for Beyonce’s I Am… Tour have surfaced online and, from what fashion insiders are saying, they’re truly a sight to behold. With the focus falling mainly on the duality of a woman (woman and warrior, as the French designer calls it), they depict a modern one who is not afraid of standing out from the crowd – just like Beyonce is with her public persona, now commonly referred to as Sasha Fierce.
“Sasha Fierce is another aspect of Beyonce’s personality. She is Fierce on stage and Beyonce in real life. I tried to understand these two sides with my own perception of both aspects.” Mugler says to WWD as to what he tried to emphasize with the creations.
This duality is also obvious in some of the creations that have as central point mismatched gloves, or daring combinations of silk and pieces of articulated metal. The result is a superhero-type of woman, one who isn’t afraid of shocking with her image but, at the same time, holding onto her more feminine, delicate side.
To make Beyonce look even more fabulous while on stage with her tour, Mugler also made sure that there would be plenty of costume changes to keep audiences on their toes. “There will be a lot of dramatization and metamorphosis on stage.” the designer shares, promising without modesty that the show and the costumes will certainly surprise fans in the most pleasant way possible.
“The designer said he and Beyonce share ‘the sense of mise-en-scène.’ As the tour’s creative adviser, he has worked on all of the show’s visual aspects – lights, sets, costumes – while ‘working hard to achieve her dreams.’ He describes the costumes as ‘very elaborate,’ and rooted in the songs’ meanings. ‘Feminine. Free. Warrior. Fierce. As a creative adviser for this tour, it is my responsibility to make her vision come true,’ the designer said.” the aforementioned fashion e-zine further explains.
