Despite promising that the new Thief will ship with native support for AMD's Mantle technology, Eidos Montreal has now revealed that a patch that enables this option will appear after launch, sometime in March.

AMD's Mantle API allows games to run much better on PCs that are using AMD Radeon graphics cards but have underpowered CPUs.

Battlefield 4 has already received its Mantle update on PC at the beginning of the month, and now it seems that the new Thief, launching this week, will also get the Mantle support via a post-release patch.

According to a post on the official website, developer Eidos Montreal and the porting team at Nixxes still have some tinkering to do, so they'll release Mantle support as an update in March.

"We’re extremely proud of the work we’ve done with AMD to make the PC version of Thief a stand-out, definitive experience although we have a little more work to do to accommodate all of these new PC-specific features," the studio said.

"We are busy working on a patch to support AMD’s Mantle and TrueAudio technologies that is scheduled for March. We’re confident this patch will ensure the best and fastest Thief experience for AMD Radeon customers. We’re sorry we couldn’t bring this to you sooner – although we will use this time to bring you the very best experience possible and will let you know when the patch is ready."

The game will, however, support at launch other AMD technologies, including CrossFire for multi-GPU configurations, and Eyefinity for multi-display setups.

Thief launches tomorrow, February 25, in North America and on February 28 in Europe for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms. The game also caused some heated debate when it was confirmed that it will run better on PS4 than on the Xbox One.
