The team at Square Enix working on Thief admits that the title has been affected by some problems with saves and says that it is currently investigating in order to find the cause of the issue and deliver a patch that will solve it for all players.

Reports have started coming in on April 1, which made the company a little circumspect when it came to their veracity, but a larger number of players have complained about old saves that have disappeared completely or about missing side quests in those that can be loaded.

The issues exist on PCs powered by Windows, but also on the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft.

Some gamers are reporting that changing the system date seems to help with some of their saves, but the solution only works for a small number of the reported cases.

Game Informer says that a representative from Square Enix has reacted by saying that, “We're aware of an issue that seems to be affecting some Thief players, preventing them from completing some levels.”

He added, “We're taking this very seriously – as a first step we're reading as many reports of the issue as possible, working to replicate it internally, so that we can understand what's causing it. We're sorry for any disruption to your game today, and we'll update you as soon as we have more information.”

As soon as Square Enix manages to re-create the save game issue and determine its source, it will probably deliver an update for Thief on all platforms in order to eliminate it and maybe tweak other aspects of the game.

The title was launched in late February and it is designed to reboot the classic stealth franchise, allowing gamers to control a new version of Garrett in a new variant of the City.

Players have to deal with guards, cultists and other threats as they seek to find out the cause behind a mortal plague, while also dealing with a mistake linked to their own past.

The game was pretty well received on launch, although fans of the older games in the franchise have complained that neither the story nor the mechanics can compare with that of the classics.

Square Enix has not yet announced whether it plans to expand the world of the new Thief via downloadable content or if the team at Eidos will soon start working on an another title in the series.
