Smart earrings could be the next big thing in tech

Wearables have been accused of not bringing much in terms of aesthetic design, but products like the Moto 360 want to challenge this dogma.

However, if smartwatches or fitness bracelets aren’t really your thing, but you still want to try the wearable experience, you still have a few options that might have a better shot of appeasing your aesthetic sense.

Picky customers can opt for products such as the high-fashion smart MICA bracelet or might go as far as purchasing a smart ring or a smart pendant.

These products have managed to turn your average beautifying accessories into devices capable of relying notifications to your wrist, neck or fingers.

Smart earrings might be the new wearable hot spot

But you’re still going to have a problem with them if you’re an earrings type of girl. Luckily for you, a Kickstarter project is here to have your back.

The Ear-o-Smart is a pair of smart earrings that might as well substitute products like health bands and heart-rate-monitoring earbuds like the SMS Audio.

These pieces of ear jewelry should also be able to monitor your heart rate, but also calories burned and activity levels by flashing a LED onto your skin and measuring the light reflected back from your blood. The information is then relayed via Bluetooth to your iPhone and Android smartphone.

So basically the pair is a cleverly disguised fitness monitor which uses PPG (photoplethysmogram) technology to monitor your pulse.

Ear-o-Smart is said to be more accurate than most fitness bands, because they don’t move around and are firmly attached to your flesh, unlike wrist bound wearables.

According to the product’s Kickstarter page, the most significant reason for bad quality readings is the “poor” contact between the skin and the device.

Now you’re probably wondering how much battery life these tiny earrings can actually sustain. The team behind the project says they have been developing variants charging through USB and wireless charging, but we should expect a minimum of 8 hours.

The earrings are going to be quite customizable

The good news is that given the small size of the monitor, a number of gems, stones and earring cases will be used in concert with the technology, so you can expect a wide range of choices to be made available.

Ear-o-Smart is currently gathering up funds on Kickstarter and is eagerly awaiting your pledges.

If you want to help out sending this wearable into mass production, you can sign up to get a simple pair of earrings for $110 / €88. On the other hand, for $133 / €107, you will get a designer kit that will help you design your own pair.
