The game offers a very interesting and unique experience

There Came an Echo, the voice-controlled real-time tactics game, is now available on Steam.

Developer Iridium Studios references Ender Wiggin, which is cool, and Admiral Ackbar, which is less cool, in the game's description on Steam, stating that great leaders are able to achieve victory by issuing precise commands that put their units in the best position to outplay opponents.

The game lets you assume control of a group of mercenaries and pilot them through various scenarios in real time, with the biggest difference from pretty much anything that has ever been done before being that you can do so using an advanced voice recognition system.

And since the game's protagonist is voiced by none other than Wil Wheaton, you'll be able to shout "Shut up, Wesley!" until your voice grows hoarse.

The game will live or die by the quality of its voice recognition algorithms, and the team made sure to support not only various English-language accents but also foreign languages.

A potentially brilliant premise

There Came an Echo is set in the near future, which means that players can make use of futuristic energy weapons and personal force fields through a variety of interesting missions.

Gamers are able to set up waypoints and signals and have the team make plans come to life, but the best thing about it is that, aside from the standard commands, you'll also be able to customize the system with your own unique variants, which means that saying "everyone do the Macarena" can actually convey engagement orders.

Of course, the game also supports the standard keyboard and mouse control scheme, which means that you'll also be able to play it like any old tactical game, if you're the more quiet type.
