Arsene Wenger is clearly thinking for the future. There's no other way to explain his preference for Theo Walcott on Wednesday. Since Arsenal already built a comfortable win in Zagreb (3-0), the Frenchman decided to give the 17-year old a chance against Dinamo tonight.
And the reason is Walcott's great performance in the Premiership opener against Aston Villa. Sven Goran Eriksson was the first to trust Walcott when picking him for the World Cup squad earlier this summer.
Although he didn't get to play one second for the national team, Theo is considered one of the greatest talents in English football.
Thierry Henry himself admitted that Theo will be Arsenal's new star and that his teammate could become the new idol of English football. At the early age of 17, Walcott played his first game for Arsenal last weekend and crossed the ball to Gilberto for Arsenal's equalizer only minutes after coming into the game.
"He got so many accusations after the World Cup because England was not successful. It's a player not playing but suddenly he's responsible because England didn't win the World Cup. I'm very pleased that he came on and did well. He has shown that he can do well. I believe, if you compare him today to the player who came here, he has made a big step forward. You expect that at his age. 17 years is still very young and he was only 17 in March", stated Wenger when talking about his player.
With Ashley Cole, Jose Antonio Reyes and Tomas Rosiky out of the squad due to different reasons, Wenger chose the exact squad as for the Aston Villa game on Saturday. That means Theo Walcott will also be included. Whether on the pitch or on the sidelines, we will see.
