That means you can have up to 48 TB capacity on 8-bay units

Network-attached storage devices can be a great alternative to servers, especially if it's at home that you want to install it, or even on an office floor. It will act like a server without taking up a whole load of space.

Not too much time ago, Western Digital introduced WD Red hard disk drive units made specifically for NAS devices. The best had 6 TB storage space.

Now, I wouldn't blame people for instantly gushing over the chance to pack 24 TB into a single, 4-bay NAS device as small as a bread box, but I'll have to burst your bubble: most NAS devices can't handle anything over 4 TB.

Fortunately, that doesn't mean that there aren't any that do. In fact, Thecus has just added compatibility to its NAS and NVR storage lineup, so long as they features NASware 3.0 firmware/software.

It should be easy enough to update them over the Internet if they aren't recent enough to have shipped with it pre-installed.

The Thecus NAS and NVR devices have up to 8 bays, meaning that their capacities are of up to 48 TB now. Assuming that you stick to home and small-office needs, of course. Enterprise systems with 8-16 bays can go well beyond that.
