While hackers are generally regarded as the bad guys, a couple of iOS coders - Dustin and Sam - are sounding the alarm that a 5 dollar jailbreak tweak on Cydia is a complete ripoff.

According to ChipHazard, the hackers were intrigued by the recent hype surrounding a 4S ‘Battery Fix’. One of them tested it and found that all it does is replace a single line of code in the iPhone’s underlying software, changing the power settings and doing nothing to alleviate the battery drain woes.

“I looked for any possible impact of this. While this sounds good… we’re changing the power settings right?”, writes one of the hackers. “The reality is that it does absolutely nothing. I wrote a small program to look at the active power settings (which is what the phone uses of the plist that is modified) and this is the result,” he wrote.

Code savvy readers can go over his findings here.
