Lenovo was pretty busy this week, as the tech giant took to the stage in London to unveil a few new products under the all-popular Yoga banner.

Lenovo chose to launch its latest bunch of Android and Windows tablets a few weeks before Apple’s iPad event, set for October 16, in an attempt to get to customers before Cupertino has the chance to.

Lenovo Product Engineer explains how the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro came to be

Now, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Lenovo’s superstar Product Engineer, Asthon Kutcher, talks about the tablets’ design process and how he helped create the new flagships.

He mainly focuses on explaining how the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro came about, which is a device that comes with an unexpected surprise.

Before setting out to build more tablets, the Lenovo team surveyed customers’ preferences and found that consumers often tended to use their tabs in their homes, primarily as entertainment means.

With this in mind, the design team set out to create a tablet with a pretty big display, one of 13.3 inches, which was also capable of delivering advanced resolution (2560 x 1600 pixels).

Even if before the event we hypothesized the Pro tablet might be aimed at business users, Kutcher and Lenovo made it pretty clear this is a consumer-friendly device to be used around the house for media consumption purposes.

But the team also wanted to make the new Yoga Tablet 2 Pro stand out from the crowd somehow, so it bundled it with projector, virtually offering users an additional 50-inch screen.

Kutcher believes this aspect makes the Yoga line holistic and bestows flexibility upon a device that at first glance might not seem like that because of the large screen.

Kutcher is not losing any sleep over the iPad

The interviewer then moves on to ask Kutcher whether he is worried or not about the big iPad launch next week, but he seems unbothered by it.

He proceeds to poke a little fun at Apple too, saying that maybe the company will unveil a new iPhone Plus Plus. However, Apple seems to be involved in a lot of things at the moment, whereas Lenovo is focusing most of their efforts on the Yoga tablet line.

On top of that, Apple won’t probably come out with something similar to the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro. Although opinions might vary on the topic.

Lenovo is not the first company to offer a tablet designed for media consumption. A few months ago, Samsung launched its flagship tablet duo, the Galaxy Tab S, which aims for the same.

The tablet is extremely sleek and easily handled and takes advantage of a gorgeous AMOLED display to showcase all the media content.
