Intel announced the availability of its new Solid State Device (SDD), Intel Z-P140 PATA, smaller than a penny and weighing less than 1 gram. The SDD measures 12 x 18 x 1.8 millimeters and it's the smallest device of this kind ever created. Compared to the 1.8 inch SDD released by Samsung this summer, Intel Z-P140 PATA is 400 times smaller and about 75 times lighter. And although the Samsung SDD has a bigger storing capacity (60 GB), Intel Z-P140 PATA has other features that may make it a better product.

The new Z-P140 PATA SDD is especially created for small form factor requirements and can prove to be the complete storage solution for mobile phones, media players and embedded applications, meeting the needs of the next generation of mobile computing devices.

Intel Z-P140 uses the industry standard PATA (Parallel-ATA) interface and the chipscale package-on-package technology and comes with 2 GB and 4 GB capacities, expandable up to 16 GB. Moreover, the new SDD is fast (due to no mechanical latency) and durable, thus being perfect for storing and running operating systems, applications, data and media content. Supporting reading speeds of up to 40 MB/s and writing speeds of up to 30 MB/s, the new Intel Z-P140 offers fast booting time as well as fast application loading and data processing times.

A huge advantage for mobile devices is that the new Intel Z-P140 PATA SDD needs very little power, using only 300 mW (milliwatts) when active and 1.1 mW when idle. This is great for mobile phones, since the battery's life can be considerably extended.

Intel Z-P140 PATA will surely be an interesting product for mobile manufacturers, as its tiny dimensions and high-end capabilities enable the production of small but powerful devices.
